A global digital services and consulting company delivering large-scale technology across the public sector and enterprise. Worked on the Defra account.

• Built user onboarding and account-creation flows for Defra’s Extended Producer Responsibility services, supporting UK packaging compliance regulations.
• Componentised GDS-compliant page patterns and UI flows, improving accessibility, consistency and delivery speed across several public-facing EPR services.
• Used AI-driven log analysis to trace the root cause of CSV upload failures that had resisted investigation for a long time.
• Built an AI-generated developer utility that scraped configuration, mapped service dependencies and allowed services and data stores to be run locally or against the cloud selectively, making it practical to run the full system on a developer machine.

The UK government department responsible for education, children’s services, apprenticeships and wider skills development.

• Led architecture and development of major public-facing government websites across several programmes, including Find training and employment schemes, Support for Your Family, and much of the Apprenticeship Service.
• Componentised reusable GDS-compliant page patterns and UI flows into a shared framework adopted across teams, improving consistency, accessibility and delivery speed.
• Architected and built a CMS-based website framework that became the standard pattern for DfE sites.
• Rebuilt the National Careers Service estate using micro frontends, microservices, a graph database and an event-driven architecture.
• Led development of a custom Orchard Core-based CMS, including visualisation of graph data.
• Built a scalable Azure Service Fabric cluster handling identity services and business logic with zero-downtime upgrades.
• Reimplemented the Funding and Contracting Service estate as cloud-native, supporting over £3bn of annual funding.
• Designed and built a generative-AI proof of concept validating Local Authority content for publication on a central government site.
• Worked across multiple teams using Scaled Agile, CI/CD and TDD/BDD, in the open on GitHub.

• Led development of the responsive rebuild of Next.co.uk — one of the hundred most-visited UK sites — and of Next Flowers.
• Built a high-performance authentication service unifying logins across several Next platforms, holding up through peak sale traffic.
• Designed and built an in-store kiosk system integrating with enterprise back-end systems.
• Architected and developed a new call-centre management platform, replacing an expiring legacy system to a hard deadline.
• Built the back-end for Next’s iPad app.

A global IT services company, later rebranded Atos. Worked on the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency account, an executive agency sponsored by the Department for Transport.

• Built a mobile compliance solution for VOSA integrating a custom hand-held device, smartcards and digital tachographs.
• Worked on the mobile app framework, custom code generation, an interactive graphical interface, a heavily optimised database, low-level device lockdown and smartcard interfacing.
• Liaised with a bespoke hardware design company.

A market maker, set up as a joint venture between TD Waterhouse and Charles Schwab.

• Designed and built a distributed order-placing system connecting brokers and market makers, which at the time carried roughly a third of all equity trades through the London Stock Exchange.

• Built a funds trading platform, refactored the existing estate’s middle tier to be object oriented, and worked on a system supporting clients with derivative trading strategies (2001–2002).

• Built GuestNet, a web access system for hotels — including an HTTP caching proxy, an SMTP server, a web browser, an email client, and a remote admin and self-supervisory system.
• Extended the Amiga OS Datatypes library with additional video and image formats.
• Wrote MediaNEXUS, a batch multimedia file converter for video, image and sound, and InfoNEXUS, a file manager.
